I help small businesses grow online through strategic web design and SEO. When I’m not behind the screen, you’ll usually find me in East Texas with my family, coffee in hand, and new ideas always brewing.
Let’s be honest, SEO (Search Engine Optimization) can sound intimidating. It’s one of those buzzwords people throw around when they’re trying to sound techy, but the truth is, it can be a bit daunting to understand how it works, but the best place to start is on a local level.
For East Texas small businesses, local SEO is less about competing with huge corporations and more about showing up where your neighbors are looking.
Think about it this way: when someone searches “house cleaning in Longview” or “best wedding photographer near Tyler,” you want your business to pop up front and center, not buried on page three behind the chain companies. That’s what local SEO helps you do.
In simple terms, local SEO is how you tell Google who you are, what you do, and where you serve people. It helps search engines connect your business to real, local searches happening right in your community.
It’s not about fancy algorithms or hidden tricks. It’s about:
If that sounds doable, it’s because it is.
If you haven’t already set up a Google Business Profile, stop reading this and go do it. Seriously. It’s free, easy, and one of the biggest factors in local search ranking.
Make sure your business name, address, and phone number (NAP) are consistent across all platforms. Add clear photos, list your services, update your hours, and post regularly. Google loves active profiles, and so do potential customers.
Bonus tip: write your business description like a mini elevator pitch using local keywords (for example: “family-owned cleaning service in Longview, Texas”) to help you appear in relevant searches.
The secret to keyword research isn’t guessing. It’s listening. Think about what your customers actually type into Google when they need your service.
For example, instead of just using “cleaning services,” use “residential cleaning in East Texas” or “move-out cleaning Longview TX.”
Tools like Google Keyword Planner or Ubersuggest can help, but so can simply paying attention to what people ask you in person or on social media.
If you use those real phrases in your headings, meta descriptions, and photo captions, Google starts to recognize your website as a relevant answer to those local searches.
You can’t fake trust, and reviews are how you earn it.
Encourage happy customers to leave reviews on your Google Business Profile, Facebook page, or Yelp listing. The more quality reviews you have (especially ones that mention your service and location), the more likely you are to show up in local search results.
Don’t just let those reviews sit there. Respond to them. Thank people by name, address feedback, and use those positive words in your own marketing.
Think of it as SEO with heart.
Backlinks are a big deal in the SEO world because they tell Google that other people trust your site. But you don’t need to chase high-end magazine features or global directories.
Focus on local connections.
Each local mention strengthens your online footprint and tells Google you’re part of the community.
Your SEO isn’t a “set it and forget it” thing. Keep your Google Business Profile and website content updated with new photos, posts, and insights.
If you just did a holiday special, community event, or launched a new service, share it. Google notices consistent activity, and so do your followers.
You can use Google Search Console and Google Analytics to track what’s working, such as which keywords bring traffic, which posts people click, and what content keeps them around.
That data helps you decide what to do more of (and what to skip next time).
One of my favorite examples is a local East Texas cleaning company that went from invisible online to showing up in the top three search results for “deep cleaning Longview TX.”
How? They:
Within a few months, they saw more calls, more web traffic, and more bookings, all from simple, consistent steps.
That’s what happens when your online presence finally matches your real-life reputation.
If all of this feels like a lot to juggle while running your business, you don’t have to do it alone.
I work with East Texas entrepreneurs and small business owners to help them get visible online without the overwhelm.
Let’s make your business Google-friendly and community-known.
